Job purposeThe Surveyor serves as the primary resource for the execution of surveying and other related activities within Uganda.
Duties and responsibilities● Collaborate with Design Engineers and the Regional Engineering Manager in the planning and execution of bridge survey activities
● Conduct, organize and monitor the survey works
● Establish benchmarks, horizontal and vertical control points
● Carry out detailed cross section surveys along the bridge crossing sites and gather geometric information for design including nearby obstructions and features
● Layout and checking of bridge foundations
● Monitoring all field surveying works
● Checking of surveying field data
● Assess prospective bridge sites for technical approval (process survey, evaluate aerial imagery, comment on technical feasibility)
● Estimate the highest flood level for rivers
● Assist Design Engineers in engineering drawing preparation
● Assist Design Engineers in calculating material quantities for bridge projects
● Supervise bridge construction activities based on guidelines from design engineers
● Review and verify the accuracy of survey stations and all surveying activities during construction
● Execute activities as per quality control guidelines and standard forms for all bridge projects
● Perform measurement and technical inspections of constructed bridges
● Provide technical support to needs assessment teams, as required
● Record daily survey progress & data
Qualifications
Qualifications include:● Diploma in Surveying or related fields (BSc degree in Civil Engineering is an advantage)
● Minimum 7 years of related experience as a surveyor. Experience working in the construction of road/infrastructure projects is preferred
● Proficiency in the use of surveying equipment including theodolite, total station and Differential GPS others
● Knowledge of AutoCAD
● Ability to problem-solve in a fast-paced, multi-cultural environment
● Ability to take initiative and work independently after receiving direction
● Strong verbal and written communication skills with English language proficiency
Working conditionsThe position is based in Uganda and will require travel to all Bridges to Prosperity existing or prospective project sites.
Physical requirementsThe position requires participation in site assessment and construction related tasks by traveling to Bridges to Prosperity’s projects which may require walking for extended periods of time to reach bridge sites. Execution of prospective site surveys may require working in undeveloped locations without paths or river crossings.
(Senior) Design Engineer, UgandaEngineering · Kampala
Job purposeThe (Senior) Design Engineer will be responsible for the design and implementation of B2P bridges within the program country.
Duties and responsibilities
Bridge Design● Collaborate with the Regional Engineering Manager in the planning and execution of program bridge inventory
● Assess prospective bridge sites for technical approval (process surveys, evaluate aerial imagery, consider preliminary design alternatives)
● Carry out structural design of B2P bridges and temporary works.
● Manage the geotechnical investigation process and results in collaboration with geotechnical consultants and laboratories
Project Support● Calculate material quantities for bridge projects
● Prepare and manage material specifications for bridge construction
● Collaborate with the Operations department on local materials selection
● Conduct technical surveys of prospective project sites
● Mark excavations and layout site at the onset of a project
● Supervise technical aspects of bridge construction
● Support quality control for bridge projects
Program Support● Perform technical inspections of constructed bridges
● Provide technical support to needs assessment teams, as required
● Review and approve site assessments, and provide feedback to the Assessment Engineer in order to improve the accuracy of technical assessments
● Support the construction team with assessment and design of temporary works activities such as tower lifting, cable hoisting, scaffolding etc. as necessary to ensure adequacy of solutions
Qualifications / Skills● Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering (MSc degree in Structural Engineering is an advantage)
● Sound technical knowledge in the field of structural engineering
● Familiarity with surveying and use of surveying equipment is an advantage
● Proficiency in AutoCAD drafting
● Experience in the use of structural design software

The position will also require participation in construction related tasks when traveling to Bridges to Prosperity’s projects. Assisting with prospective site surveys and supervision activities may require working in undeveloped locations without paths or river crossings.
