Laboratory Technologist – (01 Position)

Reports to: Postdoc Scientist
Station: Entebbe

Job Purpose
The position holder will be responsible for improving the identification of recent HIV-1 infections using the Oxford Nanopore sequencing technology and Machine learning algorithms. The work will be conducted in Virology laboratories at the MRC/UVRI & LSHTM according to GCLP standards under the supervision of a Post Doc Scientist.

Roles & Responsibilities
• Conduct laboratory experiments as assigned by the supervisor including nucleic acid extraction, bulk PCR amplification and long-read sequencing using Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) according to established SOPs;
• Develop and implement data analysis pipelines for ONT sequencing data from HIVinfected samples;
• Predict recent HIV-1 infections using machine learning approaches;
• The post holder shall also work together with other laboratory technologists at the Unit and the MSc student on the project;
• Develops, evaluates and implements new techniques with the guidance of Senior scientist; and,
• Performs other related duties as required.

Person Specification
• Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology or relevant Biological Sciences;
• GCLP training;
• Laboratory related Health and safety training;
• At least three years of experience working in a molecular biology research setting;
• Hands-on experience and troubleshooting skills in nucleic acid extraction, bulk PCR amplification, and high throughput sequencing using either ONT or Applied Bio systems genetic analysers;
• Should possess proficiency in linux, biopython or R programming languages and other related bioinformatics analytical skills is an added advantage;
• Ability to work and troubleshoot with minimal supervision, have excellent organizational skills, computer literacy in Microsoft Office applications;

• Openness.
