JOB DETAILS:
The Role
Learning Hub activities (policy development, communications and dissemination) activities (75%)
LH project uptake and dissemination activities
• Lead on the development and execution of the LH uptake and communications strategy.
• To increase uptake of evidence and research in the refugee response, lead on accessibility and dissemination of refugee response evidence, including LH resources:
o Develop new and innovative channels and approaches to disseminate our work and refugee response learning in general, including through the use of podcasts, interactive stories, blogs etc.
o In collaboration with the Learning and Dissemination Specialist, support the development and implementation of dissemination plans for the publication of resources or events, including communications plans.
o Lead on the design, visualization, lay-out, editing and proofreading of LH resources, maintaining a focus on making these as accessible as possible, including through working with specialised consultants.
o Develop standard templates for resources that are brought out on a regular basis (desk reviews, learning briefs, etc.)
• Lead on the conceptualisation and organization of on-line and in person conveners, such as learning events, launches, field visits etc. across the LH portfolio (with support from event management consultants and in close collaboration with the Learning and Dissemination Specialist).
• With support from the communications officer,
o Assure that communications content (pictures, stories) is collected on a regular basis and used to develop strong communication products such as one pagers, invitations, blogs, visuals, newsletters, social media messages, etc.
o Create and manage a picture bank with material related to the Ugandan refugee response by liaising with, and collecting pictures from consortium members, and by taking or commissioning photographs.
o Implement communication plans, including the development of social media messages, newsletter, blogs, website updates etc.
• With support from the communications officer, manage the U-Learn on-line presence and branding.
o Manage the U-Learn social media channels (LinkedIn, twitter and facebook: @ULearnUganda).
o Manage the U-Learn mailing and subscription lists and develop a bi-monthly newsletter (including on MailChimp).
o Continuously adapt the U-Learn website so that it increasingly becomes a resource centre for the refugee response, including access to non-U-Learn resources, different maps and infographics, blogs and podcasts from refugee response actors etc. and keep website content updated
o Policy development
• Gather and analyse evidence from the Uganda refugee response (and oher contexts, global resources) in line with LH Learning Agenda themes to support learning and influencing activities (policy development), outputs can include policy/evidence briefs, background notes, and talking points & key messages.
• Humanitarian ecosystem building/ connection fostering:
o Build and maintain a network of Ugandan communications personnel, journalists, academics and on-line personalities to increase collaboration and build allies that can be engaged on refugee response learning, and support dissemination of LH resources.
o Identify and liaise with relevant global resource centres and stakeholders that can support the global dissemination of refugee response (incl LH) resources, and identify interesting content to share with refugee response actors in Uganda (global resources, events, etc)
o Build a network of key stakeholders, including policy makers, humanitarian actors (incl Ugandan and refugee-led organisations) and private sector actors relevant to the priority areas of the LH (see learning agenda)
U-RIL, U-Learn and Uthabiti communications work (25%)
• With support from the communication officer, manage the consortia’s internal communication through the monthly bulletin, developing internal materials that explain and translate the consortiums work to staff.
• Lead on communication with RIL and Save the Children communications colleagues and support internal communication with the wider staff by identifying approaches or moments to share on U-Learn and Uthabiti work internally and externally by contributing to SCI and RIL communication channels.
• Create detailed understanding on donor brand guidelines (FCDO and USAID) and assure these are respected on final Uthabiti and U-Learn products (sign-off).
• Provide regular communication technical advice and support to U-Learn, Uthabiti and U-RIL, for example through communications training, development and sharing of templates, etc.
• Support the U-Learn consortium with
o Maintaining and furthering the recognition of the U-Learn brand through the development of brand materials such as one pagers, infographics, pocket folders, notebooks, T-Shirts etc.
• In collaboration with communications consultants, support the Uthabiti consortium with
o The development and production of Uthabiti communication materials such as booklets, one pagers, banners etc.
o The process of summarizing and copy editing of key deliverables (such as the monthly activity update, quarterly report, bi-annual report).
Operational
1. Assure that the necessary resources are in place in house to assure smooth delivery of work.
o Oversee the work of the communications Officer
o Work with the Save the Children procurement team to put in place framework agreements with new service providers (video services for instance) and improve working with existing ones.
o Manage communications service providers (such as videographers or photographers), from writing the ToR, to quality assurance, dissemination of finalized products and ensure compliant supply and finance processes.
o Work with Save the Children supply chain and service providers to assure that the necessary outputs are of quality and materials are delivered on time (printers, event locations, etc)
o Expand and manage a consultancy pool (consultants on Framework Agreements).
2. Lead on MEAL for communication and dissemination activities (collect feedback data from events, report on reach, feedback on quality and accessibility of evidence etc) and through actively collecting feedback from strategic partners.
3. Support budget management for communication activities (including printing, comms consultant pool activities, website and online accounts, and comms content collection activities).
To be a strong supporter and advocate for children in this role you will need to have:
• A Master’s degree in communication, social sciences, research, policy, journalism or any relevant field. Minimum of eight years of relevant experience in the communications, Knowledge Management (KM), research and/or policy fields
• International development or humanitarian sector experience
• Experience managing staff and/or teams with proven leadership and team building skills.
• Proven experience with developing and executing dissemination and communication plans, incuding experience curating and collating on-line resources, producing content for social media, and organising events
• Excellent writing skills and ability to tailor products to audience, including ability to summarise and visualize complex resources.
• Proven experience with developing a network of key stakeholders and the development of policy products, such as policy/evidence briefs, background notes, and talking points & key messages.
• Proven project management experience (including but not limited to communications, KM, policy or learning activities), managing the project cycle from start to finish: from conceptualisation and development of ToR, plans and timelines; managing budget and project consultants; development and quality assurance of outputs; and implementation of MEAL activities.
• Prior experience and knowledgeable developing, managing and editing donor-ready communication materials, including sign-off authority.
• A creative story-teller with highly developed management, interpersonal, networking and communication skills. Keen interest in develop innovative communications approaches
• Advanced conceptual skills and ability to process large mounts of complex evidence.
• Ability to multi-task, set priorities, and maintain positive attitude, functions well in a dynamic and high paced environment.
• Ability to work well independently, as well as part of a team. Ability to manage own time and plan and manage own activities with support from manager
• Pro-active communication: asks for support when needed, identifies and communicates on risks and project delays.
• Curiosity for innovation management concepts, innovative approaches and new technologies.
Desirable
• Knowledge of the Uganda refugee response
• Working experience with desktop publishing software such as Adobe Creative Suites (InDesign) and/or Publisher, Canva, experience developing Infographics
• Knowledge of digital analytics and insights: analytics for Facebook and Google etc. HTML/CSS an advantage.
• Proven experience with influencing and avocacy approaches and methods.
• Policy experience on the following subjects: refugee self-reliance, refugee participation, the humanitarian/Development Nexus, Market System Development, Private Sector Engagement, Climate and Energy, and Entrepreneurship and Employment
• Experience with photography and videography editing software
• Tech-savy, has experience with online tools and programmes such as website development, online google forms, meeting scheduling software etc.
• Knowledge of USAID and FCDO branding and marking requirements.
