JOB TITLE: Legal Officer
PURPOSE OF THE TASK
To provide legal support to indigent defendants under the torture prevention project
QUALIFICATIONS:
A degree in law from a reputable institution.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 3 years‘experience working with an NGO on human rights related issues.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
• Interview, counsel, mediate and provide general legal support to detainees.
• Research and make regular updates on detention conditions of suspects.
• Support the organisation of conferences or workshops.
• Contribute to memoranda, position papers, reports, briefing papers to relevant bodies on torture related issues
• Undertake advocacy at national and regional level
• Track the results indicator with respect to torture related work and submit monthly monitoring response to line manager. represented the organization at different meetings organised by PHI partners.
• Provide support wherever required.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
• Experience organising meetings.
• Good writing and research skills.
• Strong commitment to human rights issues.
• Ability to work independently, multi-task and respect strict deadlines.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Willingness to work outside Kampala
• Flexibility.
