Purpose of the job:
Technology is redesigning how libraries provide services; more recently, compounded by the Covid–19 pandemic. Libraries are facing a service reconfiguration and how knowledge is managed and delivered. There is a need to streamline the following aspects:
• Maintenance of the library's integrated online system
• Centralised software maintenance and development
• Keeping abreast of the new and existing technologies for libraries
The UCU Libraries require a full-Time Systems Librarian. Systems librarianship is the art and science of combining the principles of library science with the abilities of computing technology. A Systems Librarian’s position differs from other professional librarian positions in that the incumbent must possess thorough knowledge of computer applications used in a library setting. This person will oversee the daily maintenance of Library systems and functioning of all technologies in the library. Maintains the working order of the equipment and supplies, which may include troubleshooting both hardware and software and making appropriate recommendations regarding repair, assesses the need for software upgrades.

Qualifications and experience:
1. Must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information Science or Information Technology or Computer science or related qualification.
2. Experience in systems administration, computer use in an educational setting, preferably 2 years’ experience in an Academic Library with a computer Lab environment situation involving computer facility management and troubleshooting, experience with Linux, Macintosh and Windows.
3. Experience with Library integrated and content management systems, eg. Koha ILS, LSP, Dspace, etc
4. Experience with HTML/CSS, XML/XSLT, OpenURL and MARC.
5. Experience writing new code with at least one programming language and working with APIs.
6. Strong analytical & technical thinking skills and good systems troubleshooting skills.
7. Ability to provide support and instruction to faculty, students, researchers and staff with the use of software and systems.
Knowledge of current trends and issues in information technology and libraries
8. Experience with popular MS or Open Office and multimedia applications. Should have experience working with students in a higher education setting.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Works cooperatively with the University ICT Services (UIS) to administer, implement, develop and maintain the library systems (Koha ILS, Dspace, OJS, Vireo, TEEAL, Subjectsplus etc) and the Library webpage.
2. Responsible for the design, development, and implementation of the various online interfaces that provide access to the resources and services of the University Libraries
3. Monitoring the latest technological developments and considering the relevance and usefulness for delivering the services and resources of the University Libraries.
4. Work with APIs and programming languages to solve library issues and develop innovative services.
5. Collaborate to integrate library applications with other campus systems and cloud services.
6. Support Library Learning Commons Service Desk services and projects.
7. Keep inventory records of library hardware and software.
8. Provide support and training to students and faculty/staff users regarding the use of Library software applications and hardware.
9. Write technical documentation for software and hardware use (how to manuals for the library).

1. This position requires some management skills and extensive computer experience.
2. Must have knowledge of computer software and hardware maintenance, installations, operating systems (Linux, MacOS and Windows) and troubleshooting.
3. As the needs of the student population vary and are constantly changing, analytical and creative abilities are essential for this position.
4. The ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing is needed.
5. Should be capable of setting priorities and moving several tasks forward simultaneously.
