Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the leading United Nations organization fighting to end the injustices of poverty, inequality and climate change. Working with a broad network of experts and partners in 170 countries, we help nations to build integrated, lasting solutions for people and planet earth. In Uganda, UNDP has over the last 50 years been supporting the Government to achieve sustainable development, create opportunities for empowerment, protect the environment, minimise natural and man-made disasters, build strategic partnerships and improve the quality of life for all citizens. The United Nations Development Programme in Uganda is implementing the Restoration of wetlands and associated catchments in Eastern Uganda project funded by the Austrian Development Agency worth Euro 1,9 million for 3 years starting 2021 to 2023 in collaboration with Ministry of Water and Environment in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, 5 District Local Governments of Kaliro, Namutumba, Kibuku, Budaka and Butaleja and selected Civil Society Organizations namely BRAC Uganda and ECOTRUST. The project is comprised of three components namely: –
• Restoration and management of wetland hydrology and associated catchments.
• Improved agricultural practices and alternative livelihood options in wetland catchments.
• Knowledge management and communication. NB: The assignment is based in Mbale district.
Task description
• Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Livelihoods and Environment officer (based in Mbale district) will:
• Promote a common understanding, within the communities and other relevant stakeholders on the UNDP’s role in environment-related aspects of livelihoods recovery.
• Consolidate and designs livelihood plans for the communities including sound approaches for environment-related aspects of livelihoods in recovery in wetland restoration program.
• Provide technical and strategic support to UNDP and the programme manager in developing area-based approaches in recovery situations and supports the consolidation and dissemination of tools and analytical approaches to understanding and reducing environmental crisis risks in vulnerable livelihood systems.
• Build partnerships and supports networks, within and beyond the target areas of implementation, regarding environment-related aspects of livelihoods in recovery situations.
• Contribute to UNDP’s knowledge building on environment-related aspects of livelihoods in recovery situations.
• Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor. Results/expected outputs:
• As an active UNDP team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly, and high-quality support rendered to UNDP and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including: o Creating a decisive impact on the capacity of UNDP to effectively implement the ADA-funded Restoration of Wetlands and Associated Catchments Project in Eastern Uganda because of creating appropriate livelihood options for the target communities. o Systematically integrating and documenting Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspectives in all activities throughout the assignment.
• A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed

Nationality
Candidate must be a national or legal resident of the country of assignment. Required experience
3 years of experience in the field of sustainable livelihoods approaches with a focus on recovery and reintegration in crisis and complex contexts. Experience in partnership building and/or inter-agency coordination in post-conflict and/or post-natural disaster settings in particular at the field level and working with donors and NGOS. Proven ability to interact at the highest governmental and inter-agency levels. Familiarity with UN common procedures and tools, especially regarding needs assessments, pooled funds and joint programming is added advantage. Experience in project design, implementations, and evaluation. Experience in the use of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.). Have affinity with or interest in building resilient communities, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

Master degree or equivalent in International development, Agricultural economics, sustainable livelihoods, public policy, environmental studies or other relevant social sciences.

Living conditions and remarks
The assignment is based in Mbale district. As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.
