Job Summary:
Performs research development with senior research staff to develop, implement, manage, and conduct research studies. Makes detailed evaluations, observations, analyzes data and interprets results using qualitative/quantitative methods and statistics. Investigates, creates, and develops new methods and technologies for project advancement. Work with senior research staff to develop and implement non-clinical research studies. Leveraging previous experience, provides input on the best ways to obtain accurate information from study participants in ways that address research objectives and permit data-based conclusions. Serves in a leadership role for junior staff in the division, providing mentorship, and developing systems to improve work. Works with diverse teams on multiple projects at once. Demonstrated strong mentoring and teamwork skills.

Accountabilities:
Research/Technical
• Conducts or oversees literature reviews; prepares search criteria; oversees staff in conducting search and review of articles; develops report and provides synthesis of gaps and opportunities.
• Collaborates on study design and drafts research or evaluation protocols.
• Collaborates on or leads the development of study documents; drafts data collection tools and oversees documents created by study staff.
• Reviews and provides technical assistance on what questions can be answered by available datasets, data management, research ethics, data collection form development or programming, data quality, analysis, and presentation of results both internally and externally.
• Develops training materials or reviews materials developed by study staff; leads or co-leads trainings for study implementation.
• Monitors or oversees monitoring of data as it comes in from the field for completeness and accuracy and redresses any issues with data collectors.
• Conducts qualitative data management and analysis.
• Leads or oversees the development of qualitative codebooks.
• Ensures identifiable information is removed from transcripts.
• Applies codes consistently to transcripts using application software.
• May lead a team of analysts to ensure consistent coding; writes coding memos or provides oversight to others.
• Conducts quantitative data management and analysis.
• Develops or oversees development of a codebook for complex quantitative datasets; obtains, merges, and cleans quantitative datasets.
• Conducts sophisticated analyses (e.g., complex sampling designs or longitudinal data) using statistical software with minimal oversight from senior staff.
• Prepares datasets and associated documentation for public data sharing.
• May review datasets and documentation from other Research Associates prior to public data sharing; verifies complex analyses conducted by others prior to publication.
• Mentors more junior staff on analysis and data cleaning; translates complex statistical procedures to lay audiences.
• Leads development of dissemination materials including data visualizations for various audiences, and presents or disseminates findings.
• May provide oversight of others in preparation of study products.
• Fields questions on study products, including from donors/clients.
• Contributes to new business development efforts by synthesizing information, providing illustrative research or evaluation examples, drafting sections, or contributing to capability statements.
• Mentors Research Assistants, Interns, and junior Research Associate.
• May lead small proposals.
Project Management/Coordination
• Manages communications with the sponsor, study team, sites, and vendors; may serve as the primary liaison for sub-contractors (e.g. data collection agencies), sponsors, and other high-level partners.
• Provides technical assistance and oversight to local research partners throughout the study.
• Organizes, plans, and executes events/sessions (e.g., webinars, presentations, and others) designed to advance research/scientific goals.
• Tracks study progress and timelines; identifies and communicates potential problems and is responsible for appropriate escalation and resolution.
• Support to financial administration of project.
• May oversee study budget; may develop and execute subawards and consultant agreements; develops and monitors budgets for research activities.
• Performs other duties assigned.

Applied Knowledge & Skills:
• Ability to analyze and interpret data, identify errors, and prepare reports.
• Experience programming surveys for electronic data collection.
• Familiarity with data visualization software, interactive dashboard creation, or geographic information systems preferred.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Applied knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures for conducting research studies under government regulations.
• Demonstrated project and research management skills.
• Demonstrated mentorship and team lead capabilities.
• Communicates information obtained through detailed assessments clearly, diplomatically, and in a timely manner.
• Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English, fluent in host country language as appropriate.

• Works on problems of moderate scope that require a review of various factors.
• Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
• Decisions generally affect own job or specific functional area.
• Networks with key contacts outside own area of expertise.

Supervision Given/Received:
• Determines methods and procedures on new assignments.
• Mentors Research Assistants, Interns, and Research Associates.
• May coordinate activities of other research staff (Team Lead).
• Typically reports to a Manager/Associate Director/Scientist.

Education:
Master’s Degree or its International Equivalent in Civil Society, Communication and Social Marketing, Economic Development, Education, the Environment, Gender, Health, Nutrition, Research, Technology and Youth or a Related Fields
Experience:
• Minimum of 8+ years of research or evaluation experience with project management, research methodology, implementation, analysis, and reporting
• Experience with study implementation in varied contexts or on various topics.
• Prior experience in a non-governmental organization (NGO) preferred.

Typical Physical Demands:
• Typical office environment.
• Ability to spend long hours looking at computer screen and doing repetitive work on a keyboard.
• Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
• Ability to lift/move up to 5 lbs.

Technology to be Used:
Personal Computer/Laptop, Microsoft applications (i.e., Office 365, SharePoint, Skype/Zoom/Teams), cell phone/mobile technology, and standard office equipment.

Travel Requirements:
10% - 25%
