We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and highly qualified person to fill the position of Renewable Energy Specialist:

Reports to: Africa Region Energy Coordinator
Location: Kampala, with regular travels in and outside the Africa region

Project Summary
The WWF Uganda Country Office (UCO) hosts the WWF Regional Energy Hub for Africa (REH) which works with government agencies, Regional Economic Commissions (RECs), private sector, energy civil society organizations (eCSOs) and development partners to a) increase energy access for millions of Africans who lack electricity and b) fast track transformation from fossil fuels to renewable energy solutions in Africa.
Job Summary
The Renewable Energy specialist will work with the Africa Region Energy Coordinator and Uganda Country Office Energy, Climate and Extractives Program Coordinator to conduct in-depth analyses and prepare comprehensive reports on various aspects of energy transition policies, including market trends, financial mechanisms, and socio-economic implications for Renewable Energy transformation, as well as end uses like heating, cooling, and transport and other subsectors of productive use of energy.
The position will also support the Africa Regional Energy Coordinator in Regional Energy Hub (REH) and the Energy Coordinator in UCO in the implementation of sustainable energy initiatives within the Africa Energy Access Initiative (AEAI) and UCO Country Strategic plans as part of the overall Global Climate and Energy Practice (CEP).
In this regard, using policy lenses the Regional Energy Specialist will:
▪ Support the effective development and upscaling of the AEAI by providing technical support for effective integration of WWF renewable energy ambitions into UCO and other Country Offices conservation plans and strategies.
▪ Support design and implementation of WWF energy transformative projects coordinated at the Regional Office for Africa (ROA) Energy Hub together with UCO, relevant WWF Country Offices and partners in a synergetic and complimentary manner.
▪ Support the Regional Energy and UCO Energy Coordinators in coordinating existing activities and identifying new opportunities for REH, UCO and other WWF Country Offices in Africa.
▪ Support the development of various energy related reports and publications by gathering data from diverse sources, conducting thorough desk research, and soliciting inputs from stakeholders, including WWF energy focal points and partners.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Under the supervision of the Africa Regional Energy Coordinator, support expansion of energy programs as per REH, AEAI strategic plans and ambitions and WWF network standards and/or funding agency guidelines, this includes the identification of potential energy projects and collecting relevant data for developing proposals.
• Support the Regional Energy Coordinator to provide policy and advocacy inputs in the implementation of transformative energy interventions coordinated at the REH. This will include strengthening eCSOs on matters related to renewable energy policies and regulatory frameworks.
• Support the Regional Energy and UCO energy Coordinators to undertake research to produce compelling evidence and publications i.e. generate baseline data and track annual renewable energy transition, energy access and energy policy progress in priority countries in Africa.
• In close collaboration with the Africa Regional Energy Coordinator and the Regional Communications team, take lead in documenting and communicating key energy developments and public engagement and communication campaigns (such as the Earth hour etc.) within the region.
• Undertake any other related assignments as required of him/her by ROA, UCO and the Africa Regional Energy Coordinator.
Required Qualifications and Experience
• A bachelor’s degree environmental sciences and natural resource management, bachelor degree in development studies, social sciences and climate change, bachelor’s degree physical sciences
• A masters degree in any energy related field is preferred
• An addition training in policy is added advantage
• 5 years’ experience working on renewable energy related projects
• Experience conducting research
• Demonstrated experience in project design, implementation and proposal writing
• Demonstrated experience policy and advocacy preferably in energy, climate change, environment and natural resource areas
• Experience in monitoring and evaluation
• Experience working with civil society organisations and governments
• Demonstrated experience in mentorship and capacity building.
Required Skills and Competences:
• Effective communication, networking and good interpersonal skills is a key requirement.
• Good conceptual, analytical and innovative problem-solving ability with sound knowledge of developing a theory of change.
• Good understanding of key energy issues in Africa (including scenarios in Uganda).
• Demonstrated ability to handle complex processes and information integration issues.
• Ability to implement alone or as part of a team
• Proven interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi-cultural, multi-interest, multi-ethnic environment.
• Capacity of assuming a leading role, often in situations under pressure, in defining and implementing remote projects with teams of individuals of different cultures and backgrounds.
• Must be detail-oriented and have the ability to multi-task under limited supervision.
• Fluency in English and general knowledge of at least one other major language spoken (Swahili, French and Portuguese) in Africa region is an added advantage.
