Job Purpose
The position holder is to design GCP/ ICH compliant multi-site data management programs, set up study databases for projects and carry out data management tasks by cleaning and checking the data. To provide simple summary statistics, listings and results from study databases.
The main responsibilities of the post holder are to provide data management support in the design and conduct of clinical trials, epidemiological studies and community-based interventions carried out by the Unit. The position works independently within research teams taking overall responsibility for data management related issues on projects with which it’s involved. The role also entails significant supervisory responsibility line managing junior data management staff. The position undertakes a data coordinating role between PIs, project coordinator and data collectors.
The post-holder is expected to make occasional visits to study clinics, sites and communities and s/he may occasionally be required to stay overnight at one of the research stations around Uganda. They may also be required to occasional travel to take part in conferences or meeting nationally and internationally. The post holder also contributes to the Unit’s training and teaching activities and expected to provide data management support and advice to the research programs, project leaders, PhD candidates, fellowship students among others
Roles & Responsibilities
Principal duties and responsibilities;
• Design and manage multi-site GCP/ICH complaint study/trial databases;
• Contribute to the design of eCRFs/CRF and data collection tools;
• Generate and maintain codebooks and data dictionaries;
• Extract, process and integrate data from different sources into one central system or database;
• Participate in the development and review of data management plans, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and any meta data for data management at the Unit;
• Develop data cleaning scripts, generate queries and create progress reports for ongoing studies. The position is also responsible for the review of data cleaning scripts for data managers in their programmes;
• Work closely with statisticians and produce bespoke data files /data tables for further analysis;
• Liaise with programmers to review data backups/dumps and ensure these are effected and documented e.g. conducting dry runs for data recoveries;
• Create system validation reports for the projects assigned to;
• Liaise with project leaders to ensure compliance to GCP/ICH and GDPR guidelines for the projects assigned to;
• Liaise with the Archives team to have proper documentation and storage for project records assigned to;
• Respond to questions and issues raised by the PI, regarding the data and results obtained;
• Work closely with the data programmers to set up and maintain data management systems;
• Mentor and train Data Managers on data management procedures; • Participate in the facilitation of Data Management courses at the Unit; and,
• Undertake additional tasks as required by the Head of Data Management.
Line Management Responsibilities;
• The post holder may be tasked with line management of a small team for which the following has to be ensured;

Person Specification
• A bachelor’s degree in a data related field (e.g. IT, Statistics, database programming, Software engineering, computer science, Quantitative economics);
• MSc in Information systems or related field;
• Should possess significant practical experience (i.e. at least three years) working as a clinical Trial Data Manager;
• Experience working as the primary data manager on at least 3 clinical studies including on a randomised controlled trial;
• Experience working with specialised database software such as OpenClinica, ODK, REDCap, Access, LIMS or similar;
• Should have good analytical and numeracy skills with a good understanding of data management issues in medical research;
• Strong database programming skills in e.g., REDCap, ODK, MYSQL, OpenClinica, scripting languages; and,
• Should possess strong statistical programming skills e.g., using Stata, R, SPSS or EpiInfo, SAS among others.
