JOB DETAILS:
The Unit is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts. The Unit is now seeking enthusiastic and experienced individuals to fill the following position:
Senior Laboratory Technologist – (01 Position)

Job Purpose
The position holder will perform laboratory assays and procedures, and report results of the laboratory procedures performed according to SOPs. Participate in, Interpretation & implement study analytical plans for new studies, promote GCLP compliance, sample management, involvement in training, promote health and safety, document management and report writing and be responsible for laboratory equipment and maintenance.
Roles & Responsibilities
1. Principal duties;
• Supervise Laboratory technologist(s);
• Design, optimize and validate large flow cytometry panels;
• Process, stain and acquire stained cells/ samples through the flow cytometer following standard operating procedure;
• Analyse data from cytometers and sequencers using available analysis tools and programmes;
• Review PBMC isolation and cryopreservation worksheets on quality indicators;
• Receive, process and store study samples according to established SOPs;
• Monitor study samples storage conditions including temperature; and,
• Any other assignments.
2. Financial Management;
• Maintains reagent stock records to avoid stock-outs/ overstocking, both of which can lead to financial loss;
• Monitors equipment functioning, and service & reports malfunctioning equipment; and,
• No financial signatory responsibility.
3. Line Management;
• Participate in & follow MRC/UVRI/LSHTM procedures & policies;
• Undertake any other duties within the grade that may arise due to LSHTM integration; and,
• Engage in harmonization of workflow procedures between within the Unit & London.
4. LSHTM integration;
• Participate in & follow MRC/UVRI/LSHTM procedures & policies; and,
• Undertake any other duties within the grade that may arise due to LSHTM integration.
5. Environment;
• Advocate for the responsible and efficient use of resources.
Person Specification
• Msc degree in any science disciplines such as (but not limited to) Medicine, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Immunology, Virology, Pharmacology, Genomics/Genetics, Structural Biology, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Physiology, Biophysics, Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, Biotechnology, Oncology, Metabolism, Cardiovascular, Neurology, Public Health, Health Services Research, Epidemiology, Pathology;
• Bachelor’s degree in any science discipline.
• Expert Cytometry Master Class Certification;
• GCLP training/ current Allied Health Professions license;
• Should possess experience in thawing and staining PBMC with antibodies;
• Experience in sample acquisition through flow cytometer;
• Experience in DIVA, SpectroFlo and Flowjo software(S) and scripting in R;
• Should possess knowledge of GCP/GCLP or other regulatory environments in the workplace;
• Knowledge of safety regulations;
• Ability to show initiative, problem solve and make independent decisions;
• Provision of high-quality training and supervision to staff and students;
• Lead quality assurance programs;
• Technical expertise and leadership;
• Independent assay development & troubleshooting of new procedures;
• Excellent organisational skills;
• Good communication skills in English;
• Ability to take the initiative and solve problems; and,
• Excellent interpersonal and team working skills with the ability to work with staff at all levels.
