JOB DETAILS:

Summary

Amazima has immediate needs for Special Education Teachers in both The Amazima Primary School and The Amazima Secondary School. The Special Education Teacher is to assist in the evaluation and identification of pupils who need the support of the special education program, provide specialized small group instruction, and encourage an inclusive environment.

Qualifications
• Must be a committed Christian who is in full agreement with the Statement of Faith of The Amazima School.
• Professional and personal references must demonstrate observed manifestation of godly character
• and spiritual maturity.
• Must be committed to the mission of The Amazima School.
• Must demonstrate humility, teachability, and a desire for professional growth.
• Must be willing to make a minimum two year commitment
• Must have a degree in Special Needs Education.
• Preferred experience living or working in a developing country.
• Teaching experience preferred.
• If married, candidate’s marriage and parenting must demonstrate Christian character and maturity.Must be a committed Christian who is in full agreement with the Statement of Faith of The Amazima School.

Duties & Responsibilities
Identification and Communication

• Work with the Special Education Coordinator to assess all recommended and referred learners to identify special education needs; participate in the tracking and reporting of identified pupils.
• Collaborate with the Special Education Coordinator to develop and implement individualized plans for each identified learner; continually assess performance, track progress, and update plans as necessary.
• Work with the Special Education Coordinator, Head Teacher, Deputy Head Teachers, and Scholarship Director to inform parents/guardians on pupils’ needs and progress.
• Support parents/guardians, teachers, and pupils to understand the God-given value of pupils with special education needs; give parents/guardians tools for supporting pupils at home.

Teaching Responsibilities

• Teach your subject(s) to groups of pupils at TAS, integrating subjects as well as Biblical truths by making connections between content, ideas, and the common use of the tools of learning.
• Work with colleagues to formulate plans which have coherence and relevance to the needs of the individual pupils and to the aims and objectives of TAS.
• Work with colleagues to ensure that all lessons are planned with clear aims and objectives, and are differentiated and delivered in line with the pupils’ individualized plans.
• Check that all subject matter is effectively communicated and understood by all groups of pupils.
• Plan one-on-one or small group lessons to provide intensive instruction on identified needs.
• Take into account the differing abilities of pupils and differentiate work accordingly.
• Encourage all pupils to be actively engaged in their own learning and in reviewing their progress against targets.
• Ensure that all experiments and activities are safe and contribute directly to the educational objectives.
• Work with therapists to help support pupils in accomplishing therapy treatment plans.
• Set appropriate work for classes within your subject area during any periods of absence and make sure that the work is thoroughly reviewed on return.

Classroom Environment and Discipline

• Act as a positive mentor and role model and promote the classical and Biblical aims, values, and ethos of the school.
• Promote and safeguard the welfare of pupils with special education needs; ensure their inclusion in the school environment.
• Ensure that all pupils are known by name and that the classroom atmosphere is positive at all times.
• Encourage and foster intellectual curiosity.
• Work with colleagues to establish and maintain high standards of pupil conduct.
• Implement behavior plans to support pupils with challenging behaviors.
• Deal with inappropriate behavior quickly and effectively according to the pupil’s behavior plan and the school discipline policy.
• Monitor pupil participation, demeanor, and attitude in class and ensure that follow-up procedures are put in place when necessary.
• Keep work areas tidy and organized to promote safety and learning.

Information Management

• Ensure the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date information on all classes taught.
• Identify and take appropriate action on issues arising from data, systems and reports. Produce reports for the department on assessment data, including examination data.
• Ensure that attendance is taken and recorded daily.
• Ensure that grades are updated and posted in a timely manner.
• Keep careful records of pupil progress in line with departmental and school policy, communicating and consulting with Parents/Guardians, and taking other appropriate actions as needed.

Professional Responsibilities
• Set an example of servant leadership: use Biblical principles to resolve disputes, speak to edify and encourage, and demonstrate faithful obedience to God’s laws.
• Assist in the development of curriculum; develop an understanding of the required Ugandan curriculum and examination standards.
• Attend scheduled meetings in the subject department and school.
• Attend all role-relevant events including but not limited to Reporting Days, Visitation Days, field trips, etc.
• Carry out a share of supervisory duties which may be reasonably required by the Head Teacher.
• Actively promote the school’s policies at all times.
• Have general knowledge of computers and technology, and be familiar with technology resources such as; Google Drive, Google email, Microsoft Office, etc.
• Continue your own professional development under the supervision of the Head Teacher
• Keep updated with reforms and policies regarding special needs education.
• Effectively communicate and collaborate with Special Education Teachers and Teacher Aides.
• Promote teamwork and collaboration within the department.
• Seek to have cultural sensitivity and humility in all aspects of the position, studying the physical, spiritual, and educational culture of Uganda.
