JOB DETAILS:
The Unit is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts. The Unit is now seeking enthusiastic and experienced individuals to fill the following position:
Statistician – (01 Position)

Job Purpose
The position holder will provide data management and statistical support to the GPC visibility project among other assignments. The Job holder will lead the data curation for the GPC visibility project. He/she will lead the statistical and data management aspects in the curation of the GPC data from survey & census round one done in the late 80s to latest survey rounds. Participate in the training of epidemiological and/or statistical courses in the Unit.
Roles & Responsibilities
1. Principal duties;
• Lead the data cleaning team to clean the data for all the survey and census rounds conducted over the years;
• Review the data files produced by Data Management Team for completeness and consistency;
• Under the guidance of a Scientist Statistician, produce summary reports from each cleaned survey and census round;
• Format all cleaned data to compatible file format e.g. CSV & ensure secure storage on the
Statistics and Data section server;
• Work with the Unit communication team and data programmers to update the GPC visibility project website pages;
• Working with a Scientist Statistician and other Statisticians in the Unit, develop and write statistical analysis plan for identified questions for proposed scientific publications;
• Provide statistical support for the proposed scientific publications;
• Contribute to proposal writing and protocol development by providing advice on statistical methods and study designs appropriate for these studies;
• Keep close collaborative links with statisticians and other researchers at MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit as well as with other international partners;
• Prepare scientific reports and present results in meetings with colleagues and collaborators;
• Disseminate research outputs through high-impact publications;
• Contribute to the Statistics section's collegial environment including through teaching and training activities and participation in regular academic/journal club meetings;
• Join the GPC visibility project working team and contribute to the team’s activities; and,
• To undertake additional tasks as required by the Head of Statistics or assigned supervisor.
Person Specification
• MSc in Medical Statistics or closely related subject;
• Should possess at least 3 years’ experience working as a Statistician in a clinical research setting;
• Experience analysing data from general population cohorts or that from serial cross sectional surveys;
• Experience writing Data Management and Statistical analysis plans and presenting final study reports;
• A good understanding of data management role and procedures in clinical research;
• A good experience of dissemination of research results through scientific manuscripts;
• Reasonable experience of data sharing and associated policies;
• Experience working with specialized database software such as OpenClinica, ODK, REDCap, MS Access or similar;
• Genuine interest in census & survey data analysis;
• Should possess a track record analysing serial cross sectional survey datasets;
• A proven track record as a statistician on research studies and ability to create reports summarizing study findings;
• Excellent attention to detail, strong analytical skills and a good understanding of statistical issues in medical research;
• Excellent communication skills, and written and spoken English and ability to communicate research results to non-statistical researchers; and,
• Prior experience working with clinicians and other non-statisticians.
