Overall purpose of the job.
To supervise and control all activities concerning factory water and effluents from sugar factory, in order to ensure quality water for various factory uses, maximum recycling of the sugar material, contaminated effluent and discharge of as little as possible effluent in a form not harmful to the environment.

Key Responsibilities
1. Monitor the level of feed water for both high- and low-pressure boilers.
2. Supervise the operations of the (R.O) reverse osmosis plant in order to ensure sufficient make up for boiler feed water.
3. Oversee the pre-treatment of raw water before using it in the boilers.
4. Supervise the cleaning of the ash clarifier unit during shutdowns.
5. Ensure the separation of clean and highly contaminated effluent from the factory.
6. Supervise the operation and maintenance of the T.Z.E (Towards Zero Effluent) steam ejector and pumps and ensure that they are always operational.
7. Oversee the recovery of sugar material using the steam ejectors and pumps.
8. Supervise the operation of the effluent treatment facility.
9. Ensure proper disposal of the spent chemicals e.g., caustic soda, after use in the evaporators and vacuum pans.
10. Train junior staff on the operation of the reverse osmosis plant, the clarifier unit and other parts of the plant.
11. Oversee the proper treatment of the co-gen turbine condenser cooling water (Cooling tower water).
12. Ensure availability of water treatment chemicals.
13. Oversee proper operation of the ash clarifier and ensure continuous removal of the ash from the units.
14. Report any malfunctioning/ breakdown of the clarifier to the concerned authorities for immediate remedial action.
15. Ensure analysis of all factory condensates for possibility of recycling e.g. for use as boiler feed water, imbition water at the mills, wash and drip water at the vacuum filters, etc.
16. Carry out analysis of reverse osmosis water for boiler feed water makeup.
17. Carry out analysis of co-gen turbine condenser cooling water (cooling tower water)
18. Ensure the availability of analytical equipment, apparatuses, chemicals and reagents required for water analysis.
19. Notify factory maintenance section about defects and faults in the whole water circuit/ system.
20. Compile daily and monthly reports for senior management.
21. Adhering to and enforcing the Safety, Health and Environment Policy of the company.
22. Performing any other related duties as may be assigned to you by the Superintendent- Process/
Management from time to time. Please note that you may be required to work anywhere within the company.

Knowledge, qualifications & Experience
Education:
A degree in chemistry or process technology plus a post graduate diploma in sugar production control.

Experience, Skills and Competences:
Three (3) years of experience. Knowledge in sugar processing is of added advantage. -Identification of various laboratory chemicals, calibration and calculation of laboratory readings, various laboratory analytical practices and procedures, laboratory analysis of sugar from cultivation to finished product, supervisory skills, communication and interpersonal skills, planning, analytical, monitoring and evaluation skills, etc.
