For our sister company in Uganda, 'Resiliencia Uganda,' we seek passionate individuals to promote sustainable farming systems in Eastern Uganda, as part of the 5-year INSPIRE programme.
INSPIRE Program (2024-2029)
Led by GOAL and Wageningen Environmental Research, INSPIRE aims to foster resilient economic and agricultural development in rural communities in Lango and Busoga regions. Resiliencia Uganda will be responsible for implementing the Sustainable Farming Systems component under the INSPIRE the program design.
The Position
We are looking for a dynamic Water & Irrigation Management Officer to join our dedicated project team in Uganda. Your primary responsibility will involve assisting smallholder farmers in adopting sustainable farming practices and enhancing water management techniques. You will collaborate with a team consisting of 9 officers specializing in water management, irrigation, and sustainable land management, operating across 9 districts within the Lango and Busoga sub-regions. Based on your skill set, you will be assigned to one of these districts, where you will undertake the following duties:
Responsibilities
1. Overall project support
• Work in an integrated manner with the other technicians of the INSPIRE program
• Support activities planned within the INPSIRE program (potential wider activities then purely the irrigation and water management activities)
• Support the development of the Integrated Community Plans – specific provide input on Land and Water management aspects
2. Promotion of Sustainable Farming Systems:
• Support farmers in determining their water management needs o If needed, develop Small-Scale Irrigation Plans
• Implement Water Management Technologies
• Collaborate on Integrated Farm Planning
• Conduct On-Demand Trainings
• Establish demonstration plots for sustainable water management practices
• Organize annual farmer exchange visits and roadshows to showcase innovative practices.
• Coordinate annual competitions to showcase successes and stimulate investment.
3. Training and Capacity Building:
• Provide ToT (trainer of trainers) trainings to project members and partners organisation on Irrigation and water management
• Provide technical training on water management practices
• Establish Demonstration Fields for Water Management
• Collaborate with Extension Officers
• Contribute to the develop of video content showcasing best practices for dissemination
Requirements
• Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Mechanization, Irrigation Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or related field. A master's degree is beneficial.
• Work Experience: 5-10 years in sustainable agricultural projects and water management initiatives.
• Skills: Strong understanding of smallholder farmer practices, climate-smart agriculture, and low-tech irrigation and water management techniques.
• Language Skills: Fluent in English and local languages relevant in Lango and Busoga sub region
• Field Experience: Implementing water management projects, irrigation systems, smallholder farmer projects.
• Location: Eastern Uganda, Lango Sub-Region (Lira) & Busoga Sub-region (Jinja).
• Other Skills: Proficient in reporting, Excel, and data programs.
