JOB DETAILS:
• Responsible for management of the Country Office communications strategy that positions and showcases a coherent message on the organization’s core intent, the country’s programs and advocacy initiatives, and enhances visibility and brand recognition. Position supports both external and internal communications.

Duties/Responsibilities
Country Office Communications Strategy

• Implement a comprehensive in-country communication strategy that profiles the impact of ChildFund’s work, using written and visual storytelling.
• Develop, implement and maintain an in-country online communication presence using the web and social networks.
• Lead new approaches to creating and distributing multi-media content related to ChildFund in country.

Content Creation and Management
• Create and deliver content – stories, photos, video, quotes, and other information – that help the organization build and nurture relationships with donors and the general public, globally. Proactively share stories and visual assets with the International Office and Alliance partners. Provide high-quality English translations of all story material.
• Storyteller – visual and written. In accordance with the global content calendar, collect stories, photos and video about children and their experiences of the sponsorship relationship and ChildFund’s programs, to show impact and build donor trust as well as engagement.
• Write, edit, and oversee the production of publications such as newsletters, annual report, brochures, policy planning reports, etc.
• Coach local partner staff on capturing and sharing stories, photos and videos about children and their experiences of the sponsorship relationship and ChildFund’s programs.
• Ensure that all content deliverables comply with branding guidelines, child safeguarding standards and other controls of the organization.

• Support Program, Business Development and Advocacy teams in creation of collaterals and other published material. Ensure global awareness and access to final materials.
• Keep the International Office content contact apprised of Country Office initiatives, successes, events, holidays and other items of potential relevance to global communications, both internal and external.
• Manage rapid collection of child-focused quotes, stories, photo and video in the immediate aftermath of emergencies.
• Knowledge Management & Learning Support: Develop and/or ensure your teams develop learning and knowledge products that meet standards and enable organization-wide learning and sharing by documenting approaches, project and program designs and lessons, case studies and other knowledge products.

Brand, Visibility/Representation
• Act as brand ambassador, responsible for in-country communications, including collateral print materials, country digital channels and for managing in-country media relations, all toward building the brand.
• Create and deliver content for public messages and branding of ChildFund in country.
• Raise awareness through media of the value and impact of major ChildFund projects in the country.
• Alert Country Office Director to potential reputation risks in country.
• Manage activities, communications, special events, workshops, meetings and conferences.

Alliance Relationship Management
• Proactively and frequently prepare timely updates for ChildFund International website and/or members of ChildFund Alliance.
• In consultation and collaboration with Program & Sponsorship Director/Manager and Fundraising and Engagement, determine creative and innovative ways to address reporting requirements for ChildFund International programs for Alliance partners using the SMART system (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely) and effective storytelling.

Resource Mobilization
• Generate compelling marketing collateral to support ChildFund fundraising initiatives in country.

Internal communications
• Serve as a member of the global internal communications team/network. Act as a champion for internal communications. Support development and execution of a global internal communications strategy and plan in partnership with senior leaders, based on assessment of audiences and needs. Curate, develop and edit content for a variety of internal communications mediums to promote “One ChildFund”, and deliver content across multiple channels and mediums, in multiple languages. Help select and roll out existing or new internal communications tools (in partnership with Knowledge Management & Learning and IT), and train senior leaders and staff in effective communications techniques and usage of tools. (if & when relevant) Support internal response to crisis situations which affect perception and reputation

Child Safeguarding
• Remain alert and responsive to any child safeguarding risks, acquire relevant knowledge and skills which will enable you to promote strong safeguarding practices, understand the child safeguarding policy and procedures, and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the Child Safeguarding Policy.

Qualifications/Experience
• 5+ years of demonstrated work experience in journalism, marketing, public relations, media campaigns, and nonprofit communication or related area.
• Clear grasp of communications strategies and creativity in applying them to raise awareness of ChildFund’ s activities and achievements.
• Extensive event organization and promotion experience.
• Strong experience with website development and content management systems. Ability to express technical concepts in clear, simple language for diverse audiences, including the general public.
• Proficiency in use of social networking and new media tools.
• Analytical skills with knowledge and good understanding of global and national development issues.
• Proven extensive contact with editors and journalists from in-country media.
• Ability to work as part of a multi-cultural team and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Excellent communications skills, written and oral; English required.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including Excel, Word and Outlook, as well as desktop and web-based publishing, photo and video editing tools.

Education/Certifications
• Bachelor’s degree or higher required in Public Relations/Journalism/Corporate Communications/Marketing Relations or related field. Equivalent relevant work experience maybe acceptable in lieu of degree.
• Support The Communication specialist can draw on the support of global team members in the development of his/her responsibilities. Preferably these global team members provide input into recruitment, performance planning and evaluation. The primary global team members for this position will be:

Project Description
The goal of the five-year, USAID-funded Integrated Child and Youth Development (ICYD) Activity is for Ugandan children and youth, especially the most vulnerable, to receive the support and services necessary to lead resilient, healthy, and productive lives. The ICYD Activity is expected to achieve the following:
1. Children and youth have improved learning outcomes;
2. Children and youth are safe and healthy in their community and learning environments; and
3. Youth practice positive behaviors and are able to make informed decisions about their lives and relationships.
Working in partnership with Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) and Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development (MGLSD), district and zonal officials, and other Ugandan government and civil society partners, ICYD will comprise a series of activities to: support improved basic education for Ugandan children; address school-related and gender-based violence; facilitate enhanced child protection and support for vulnerable youth; provide support to HIV-affected orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and their caregivers/families; and support HIV care and treatment outcomes in close collaboration with clinical and community structures. ICYD will also contribute to improved systems within the MoES and MGLSD to promote Early Grade Reading (EGR) and child protection.
Job Description
The Community Mobilization Assistant (CMA) will be responsible for supporting a given number of schools to ensure that children learn to read in safe and caring environments at school, home and in the community. S/he will be expected to work with all key stakeholders including the Headteachers (HTs), teachers, School Management Committees (SMCs) and Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs), local governments and community leaders. The CMA will be part of and work collaboratively alongside other members of the ICYD Activity team, including the Early Grade Reading Officers (EGROs), District Community Engagement Supervisors (DCES) and Pre-Service Development Officers (PSDOs). This is a full-time position based in Gulu, Uganda, serving the following districts: Apac, Kole, Kwania, Lira, Dokolo, Oyam, Gulu, Kitgum, Omoro, and Agago.
As a member of the ICYD Activity team:
• CMAs will work closely with the HTs and teachers to facilitate early grade reading (EGR) activities in both Local Language and English at school-level. The core activities of the CMA will entail EGR teacher training and routine monitoring and support supervision school visits to conduct coaching and mentoring and school-based continuous professional development (CPD) for the teachers and HTs.
• CMAs will also work closely with the HTs, relevant teachers and Para Social Workers (PSWs) and Social Workers (SWs) to facilitate school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) prevention activities in school and in the community. The activities include training HTs and relevant teachers on Journeys Plus and Journeys for Community, the Early Warning System, etc., as well as establishing SRGBV prevention committees in schools and conducting monitoring and support supervision school visits to coach and mentor HTs and relevant teachers.
• CMAs will support SMCs, PTAs and other community organizations to monitor and develop plans and strategies to address barriers to pupil enrollment, regular attendance and school retention and to address other contributing factors to low EGR competences among P1-P4 learners and combat SRGBV at the school level.
• CMAs will work with the schools and community members and local leaders to facilitate the Local Reading Support Program (LRSP) and Voluntary Literacy Tutoring (VLT) activities;
• CMAs will engage and build positive relationships with local and existing school foundational structures, supporters, and partners to improve support for EGR and safer learning environments.
• CMAs will prepare and submit written reports on ICYD activities and results on a monthly and quarterly basis.
• CMAs will conduct these and other tasks as required in support of the ICYD Activity goals.

Qualifications
The candidate for the position of Community Mobilization Assistant shall have at a minimum the following qualifications:
• Grade III Teaching Certificate; diploma in a related field is preferred.
• Experience in teaching EGR.
• Experience in teacher training.
• Experience in coaching and mentoring teachers.
• Experience in conducting school-based CPD.
• Experience in facilitating SRGBV prevention activities in school and in the community.
• Experience in implementing community awareness and advocacy activities.
• Community engagement, facilitation, and training skills.
• Detailed understanding of the Ugandan education context.
• Knowledgeable of local government and community structures.
• Ability to verbally communicate in an engaging manner and write clearly and concisely in English.
• Ability to build effective relationships with relevant community and local government structures and peers.
• Ability to work within a cross cultural setting with tolerance and respect and negotiate diplomatically.
• Skills of working in a team, including basic supervision and management skills.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and with minimum supervision.
• Fluency in English and Lëb Acoli and Lëblaŋo is required.
