Job Summary/Purpose
The Senior Investment Officer – Green Finance is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and managing fundable projects in the green finance sector. The role entails coordinating green finance operations within the Investments Directorate to ensure the Bank delivers impactful, environmentally sustainable interventions that align with UDB's strategic objectives and High Impact Goals (HIGs).
Accountability Statement
The Senior Investment Officer – Green Finance is accountable for developing a robust pipeline of green investment projects, managing client relationships, and assessing the impact of green investments. This includes ensuring projects meet environmental and financial sustainability standards while contributing to the Bank’s broader sustainability objectives.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Policy and Strategy Development:
• Support the development and review of the Bank’s Green Finance Policy to enhance operational efficiency and customer experience.
• Implement green investment strategies to achieve UDB’s climate-related goals, including mitigation, adaptation, and environmental sustainability.
• Provide recommendations on green finance-related policies and strategies to guide investment decisions.
Project Development and Management:
• Develop a quality pipeline of green investment projects, ensuring portfolio growth in the Bank’s green sectors.
• Conduct detailed project analysis and prepare appraisal reports for decision-making and approvals.
• Conduct portfolio assessments for green investments, including greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting, to evaluate project impacts.
• Ensure green investments comply with both national and international reporting standards and contractual conditions.
Stakeholder Engagement:
• Build and maintain relationships with clients, strategic partners, and development organizations to drive business growth in green investments.
• Proactively solicit feedback from stakeholders and address emerging issues within the portfolio.
• Establish partnerships and network initiatives to promote UDB’s green finance agenda.
Research and Reporting:
• Prepare analytical reports, periodic performance updates, and compliance documents to guide decision-making.
• Conduct research and generate knowledge products (e.g., policy briefs, papers, and presentations) to position UDB as a thought leader in green finance.
Capacity Building:
• Train and guide UDB staff on green finance principles and compliance standards.
• Collaborate with other departments to enhance the Bank’s institutional capacity in delivering green finance initiatives.
Other Responsibilities:
• Provide expert advice on green financing, including funding structures, resilience activities, and risk mitigation.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by management.
Level of Authority
• Identify and direct green investment opportunities that align with the Bank’s Green Finance Policy.
• Recommend updates to policies, strategies, and plans related to green finance.
Relationships
• Internal: Work with all departments and staff across UDB.
• External: Engage with existing and prospective clients, business associations, development partners, and other key stakeholders.
Qualifications
• Mandatory:
o Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Natural Resources, Economics, Engineering, Climate Change, Risk Management, or a related field.
• Preferred:
o Postgraduate qualification or professional certification in a related field.
Experience
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in green finance within a financial institution or development bank, preferably involved in long-term or project financing.
• Experience in underwriting or managing green finance projects is a significant advantage.
