Main Purpose of the Job

The Assistant Librarian will assist in managing library resources, delivering user services, supporting research and academic activities, and ensuring the efficient operation of library systems. The role also involves providing information literacy training, cataloging, and promoting the use of digital and physical library resources.

Key Duties and Responsibilities;

Management of Library resources

  • Assist in cataloging, classification, and organization of library materials in line with international standards.
  • Ensure proper storage, preservation, and accessibility of library materials.
  • Conduct inventory stock checks, prepare item lists for removal, relocation and binding, and managing the archives
  • Perform circulation services including issuance and return of library materials, reshelving and tidying collections

Provide user services and support

  • Assist users in accessing electronic resources, databases and institutional repositories
  • Develop library guides, instructional materials and research support tools
  • Provide reference and research assistance to faculty and staff

Information Literacy and Training

  • Conduct Library orientations and user education programs to enhance information literacy and use of library resources
  • Train users on effective research techniques
  • Participate in the promotion of library activities to promote visibility and uptake of library services

Digital integration of library resources

  • Participate in the implementation and management of digital and electronic resources
  • Assist in the integration of open-access materials, institutional repositories, and e-books into library services

Library Administration and operations

  • Support implementations of library policies, provide clerical services and maintain a clean and organized environment
  • Participate in data collection and reporting on library usage, user feedback, and service improvements

Outreach and Engagement

  • Promote the use of library resources through awareness campaigns and faculty and staff collaborations
  • Organize and participate in library events, exhibitions and outreach activities

Person Specifications

  1. A Bachelors Degree in Library and information science or records management from a reputable university
  2. At least two years of relevant working experience in a higher learning institution preferably private.
  3. Knowledge in the use of Library Management systems (KOHA, Dspace) and plagiarism detection software (Turnitin)
  4. Experience in digital library systems
  5. Strong IT skills
