Sanyu Africa Research institute (SAfRI) is a registered not for profit organization whose vision is, ‘A world in which all women and children can enjoy high quality health care’. SAfRI’s mission is to improve maternal, newborn and child health especially among the poor through high quality, collaborative clinical research using low-cost innovative technologies. We work closely with local health care providers and government to strengthen the research capacity and promote inspiring models of evidence-based practice. SAfRI is inviting applications for the position of research midwife for a 2 -year cluster randomized trial. This trial aims to determine whether the use of alcohol-based hand rub in the community will reduce the occurrence of severe illness in newborns. The study will be done in Mbale and Budaka district.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Research Midwife (8 posts available)
Reports to: Trial manager
Supervisee: None
Deadline: 20th October 2020, at 23:59 hours.
DUTY STATION: Budaka, Mbale.
Key roles
The Research midwife’s primary role is to recruit pregnant women into the study, provide information to the participants, obtain informed consent, and complete the data collection tools. Work closely with the hub data supervisor, trial manager, other study staff and principal investigator to ensure compliance to the protocol and required regulations
Specific roles and responsibilities:
• Undertake training on study protocol(s), study SOPs, data collection, and any other manual of operation
• Review study instruments such as case report forms, study logs and any other study data collection forms for data quality, validity and completeness
• Ensure the study protocol, and all SOPs are followed and assist the principal investigator, trial manager and the data supervisor with all issues pertinent to data collection, data entry and management.
• Participate in field testing, review and administering study instruments such as health education guides, behavioral questionnaires, interview aids, IEC material and any other tool to be used for the study intervention and data collection according to the study protocol and study SOPs
• Administer participant information sheet and obtain participant informed consent
• Collect data from participants during follow-up of study participants.
• Perform community visits to participants’ residencies in rural communities
• Assist in collecting data from participants at screening, recruitment and follow-up stages according to the study protocol and study SOPs. This will occur in the homes of the women and in health centers.
• Communicate and report to the data supervisor and principal investigator any adverse or serious adverse events in a timely manner
• Provide the data supervisor with requested data or compile study updates on a regular basis
• Participate in regular meetings with the study team and the data supervisor to discuss and document study progress
• Assist in preparing progress reports in a timely fashion according to the study reporting schedule
• Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor(s).
Required Qualification and experience
• A diploma in Midwifery from a recognized university. In exceptional cases, certificate holders may be considered.
• At least 1 year of post-qualification professional experience, in a research setting.
• Experience in conducting clinical trials, especially in the community
• Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training.
• Research ethics training, such as human subject protection (HSP)
• A basic knowledge of clinical research regulatory procedures.
• Proficient in using basic computer packages including word processing, spreadsheets, power point, E-mail and Internet.
Essential skills and Specifications
• Must be able to communicate in Lumasaba, Lugwere, Luganda and or Ateso. Ability to communicate in more than one of the mentioned languages is an added advantage
• Good interpersonal skills
• Strong leadership and communication skills.
• Fluency in verbal and written English
• Highly organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated/driven.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Ability to work well in a team
• Ability to professionally communicate in writing, verbally or other means deemed appropriate.
