Background
East African Piling Company Limited (EAP) is the leading geotechnical contractor in the region, specialising in piling, drilling, and lateral support solutions. The company provides geotechnical construction services to many prestigious clients across a range of industries, including water treatment, energy infrastructure, roads, bridges, buildings, industrial structures and oil and gas.
The company has expanded rapidly over the past two years and as the General Manager, you will play a key role in driving this growth trajectory. You will lead the operations of key company departments, including projects, contracts, engineering, finance, and plant maintenance. You will also work hand in hand with the Managing Director to drive business growth, define strategy and contribute towards business development and tendering activities.
Job Summary
As the General Manager, you will oversee all business operations and ensure that projects are executed successfully, by (1) managing technical aspects of piling procedures, (2) controlling project budgets, (3) developing the piling team’s capacity, (4) managing project timelines, (5) overseeing logistics for all sites, (6) managing contracts, and (7) maintaining good relationships with existing and new clients.
You will work in conjunction with the Finance Manager to oversee company finances and company administration, procurement, and stores processes. You will also work with the senior management to develop new solutions and technologies for the East African market. In everything you do, promoting an excellent health and safety culture will be of utmost importance.
You will report directly to the Managing Director, and you will oversee the Finance, Projects and Plant Maintenance Departments. You will work closely with the company senior management team to drive the company vision and realise key strategic objectives.
Tasks and Responsibilities
The General Manager’s tasks and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following
Operational Management
• Ensure all operations are carried out efficiently
• Improve operational management systems and processes
• Coordinate all deliveries of materials and equipment to sites
• Manage project teams
• Track company resources and fleet
• Oversee maintenance and repairs of all company equipment
• Facilitate weekly operations meetings with project teams
• Control purchase orders and material requests from sites
• Oversee accurate stores and procurement procedures and records
• Improve technical execution and production rates (efficiencies) of projects
Leadership
• Build and lead a high-performance team to drive towards the company vision
• Train piling teams to improve competencies and efficiencies of site operations
• Set performance objectives and carry out staff appraisals and evaluations
• Promote a strong health and safety culture within the team
• Promote a positive and results-focused work environment
Financial Management
• In collaboration with the Finance Manager, ensure the compliance, accuracy and efficiency of company accounts, procurement and storekeeping
• Scrutinise purchase orders and payment requests
• Create detailed budgets for active projects and company operations
• Manage project budgets to improve company profitability
• Serve as an authorised signatory for purchase orders and purchase requests
• Ensure efficient financial management of company resources
• Review weekly financial statements and cash flow forecasts to monitor financial performance against objectives
Project Management
• Responsible for all company projects and Project Managers
• Review weekly project reports and records
• Analyse project reports and records for continuous improvement
• Ensure progress of projects in accordance with contract timelines
• Ensure financial progress of projects in accordance with the contract
• Commercial management of contracts
• Ensure technical compliance of operations on site as per contract specifications
• Ensure successful execution of all projects and maintaining good relationships with current and new clients
• Enforce strict adherence to health and safety policies and procedures
Strategic Planning and Business Development
• Collaboration with Managing Director and Tender Engineer in the preparation and submission of tender documents, quotations and technical proposals
• Collaboration with the senior management to define strategy for business development and introduction of new piling solutions to the East African market
Professional Skills
• Experience in management positions within construction companies in East Africa
• Experience of management of large piling and geotechnical projects or company divisions
• Strong budgeting and financial control skills
• Strong operational abilities and organizational skills
• Technical piling background
• Demonstration of contract and project management results
• Fluent English, both spoken and written
Qualifications and Experience
• Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
• At least 10 years managerial experience in the construction industry
• Ideally experience in Uganda
• Ideally including experience with piling and/or geotechnical solutions
