Finance Trust Bank (FTB) was licensed as a Tier 1 Commercial Bank on 11th November, 2013, taking over the financial services business of Uganda Finance Trust Limited (MDI). Job Summary: To handle legal advisory services and court cases by and against the Bank as well as recovery cases.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with external Counsel on Court pleadings through adequate research and appear in Courts of law and other forums as representative of the Bank
- Monitor, evaluate and report on the performance of External Counsel and make appropriate recommendations
- Prepare and review contract documents and advise on appropriate legal positions to be taken in the Bank’s best interest.
- Prepare instructions to the external Counsel to represent the Bank and strategize for successful court representation and outcome including recovery of delinquent loans.
- Prepare responses to notices of intention to sue from customers or their legal representative to redress customers or enforce bank rights.
- Handle recovery cases for both write-off and non-performing loans that are referred to the legal department.
- Provide legal advice opinions on legal matters involving banking and credit services and recommend corrective actions regarding customer grievances to forestall adverse action against the Bank.
- Provide legal advice to the Management Committee and to the Board, upon instructions from the MD/ED, Company Secretary and Legal Manager Litigation.
- Review and where necessary recommend changes to external Counsel’s remuneration.
- Upon instruction by the Head of Department or supervisor, review legal documentation for approved credit facilities, ensure perfection and enforceability thereof prior to recommendation for disbursement
- Carry out any other work-related duties assigned by your supervisor from time to time.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in law
- Diploma in Legal practice from Law Development Centre
- 3 years’ experience in legal practice gained from a financial institution or a busy law firm
- An up-to-date practicing certificate.
- Ability to develop relevant policies and foster compliance with the regulatory, statutory & internal requirements.
- Must have good Communication, Contract Negotiations and Good Drafting Skills.
- Ability to handle a diverse stakeholders and customer base.
- The ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in written form in a professional manner is deemed essential.
- Ability to build functioning working relationships across organizational, corporate, and cultural boundaries.
- Takes clear accountability and focuses on delivery of broader corporate goals.
- Ability to take decisions and progress towards goals in conditions of uncertainty.
- Ability to demonstrate positive image and uphold FTB values.
- Must be a person of integrity.
- Position carries an attractive salary and benefits package.
