JOB DETAILS:
Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) is a Public Limited Liability Company incorporated in March 2001 under the Companies Act (Cap 110), the Laws of Uganda, and in conformity with the Electricity Act, of 1999. UEGCL started operation on 1st April 2001 and is wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Uganda, with the head office located in Kampala. The mandate of UEGCL is to establish, acquire, maintain and operate electricity generation facilities as well as promote Research and Development in the Electricity generation sector while running the company on sound business principles.
The company seeks a professional, competent, experienced, and dynamic individual to fill the following position;
Job Title: Generation Manager
Positions: 2 Department: Operations
Reports to: Chief Operations Officer
Supervises Technical Manager, Maintenance Manager, Operations Manager, and Other support units of the Plant.
Job Purpose:
The Generation Manager is accountable for plant performance and is responsible for general supervision of all phases of plant operations and maintenance to ensure plant reliability, availability, and safety.
Key Result Areas
• Translate UEGCL Corporate Vision and Strategy into an aligned strategy for plant and people management.
• Apportion management time appropriately between the office/boardroom and the frontline
• Provide leadership for the successful day-to-day operation of the facility.
• Efficient and cost-effective resource utilization (water use per kilowatt of power generated, generation cost per kilowatt, generation key parameters such as MTBF, MTTR, and MTTW) etc.
• Review and carry out generation projections using projected water availability/hydrological conditions
• Monitor operation expenses and research ways to reduce costs while maintaining product quality
• Monitor plant performance and identify modifications that can improve plant performance and
• reliability
• Maintain inventory levels and control flow of necessary spares and consumables from suppliers to ensure high plant availability and reliability without compromising cash flows.
• Maintain and support a high standard of safety and housekeeping program, including ISO accreditation programs and timely communication initiatives.
• Conduct performance appraisals and provide coaching and guidance to all plant employees
• Identify 'highflyers' in conjunction with human resource specialists, fast track their development and provide mentorship.
• Encourage and promote operating in a continuous improvement environment
• Remove generation constraints; allocate human and material resources and direct generation employees to attain established goals
• Communicate with top management, research, and development, training school/institute personnel to develop new generation vision and strategies
• Maintain security system and access readers
• Comply with all maintenance activities that are geared towards compliance with the grid code, PPA, license, and/or other agreements.
• Ensure inspection and testing instructions are carried out to ensure compliance with statutory regulations and standards for mechanical control equipment, instrumentation hoists, and lifts and develop procedures, methods, and programs for meeting such requirements,
• Ensure compliance with UEGCL Plant safety and High voltage regulations in all operating processes
• Develop mechanisms for addressing identified stakeholder needs, and generate reports as required in compliance with the PPA and Grid Code.
• Timely response to inquiries made by stakeholders.
• Review and recommend to management collations, summaries, and presentations of data collected from dam safety field instrumentation analysis in the area of but not limited to stability, seepage, movement (sliding, rotation, tilting etc.), and settlement, and structural strength, response to change in seasonal changes and resilience to other natural or manmade phenomena of all hydraulic structures.
• Perform Dam safety and detailed engineering inspections of all mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and civil engineering structures at a frequency established by relevant agreements, the status of such structures, expert reviews, statutory bodies, or management.
Education and Professional Requirements
• Minimum level of Education of Honors Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university.
• Must be a registered engineer with the Engineers Registration Board
• Must hold a Master’s Degree in Engineering, Business, or management
• Postgraduate qualifications in hydropower, engineering, business and management will be an added advantage.
Related Job Experience
• At least 7 years progressive experience in a key leadership/senior position at a hydropower plant with at least 180MW generation capacity.
• Previous experience/strong understanding of budgeting/expense management with a basic understanding of financial and accounting practices
• Previous experience/broad understanding of safety systems and risk management
• Previous experience/broad understanding of human resource practices
• Good knowledge of generation plant safety and enforcement of safety rules and policies
Additional Skills/Competences
• Demonstrate understanding of the principles and applications associated with power plant operation and maintenance engineering
• Excellent planning and organizational skills, with the ability to balance generation and maintenance needs
• Strong analytical and decision-making skills
• Thorough understanding of corporate and industry practices, standards, and regulations
• Proficiency in computer engineering packages such as spreadsheets and maintenance systems
