On behalf of International SOS our national-based client, a pioneer in international health and security risk management, we are looking for a competent, skilled, and experienced Advanced Life Support Paramedic to work in Uganda.
Reports Functionality to: Site Emergency Physician
Reports Administratively to: Consortium management team
Direct Reports to: N/A
Roles and responsibilities
• The Employee is posted on-site primarily to serve as a provider of pre-hospital emergency care and to support the site clinic medical team in delivering emergency care in line with the best medical practices in the Oil and Gas industry, to the projects’ employees and visitors.
• The employee assists the Health, Safety and Environment management of the sites to perform their duties in the field of Health.
• To meet the requirements of the Consortium by delivering the responsibilities of the position in a professional, efficient and effective manner.
• To provide the best emergency care in line with International Standards and Uganda Clinical Care Guidelines
• Support and guide staff on-site to manage the site as the client’s expectations and aligned with the Oil and Gas industry, as well as respecting the national protocols
Key Responsibilities;
Emergency Care
• Assessment and immediate treatment of illness or injury.
• Liaison with the site Emergency physician for emergency support and resources as and when required.
• Ensuring that all cases managed in the facility are managed according to the best medical practices. Travel to locations where emergency medical services are required as quickly as possible.
• This travel may also include travel from the site to the nearest approved medical support facilities or hand-over to the next medical evacuation team as directed by the Assistance Centre.
• Ensuring that standards, as laid down by the consortium, are maintained.
• Ensuring the accuracy of information is recorded.
• He/she will notify their consortium management team immediately of any problems which may jeopardize site relationships or evoke client complaints.
• Keeping patient confidentiality.
• Physical assessment and first aid treatment of a patient with an Injury on Duty in liaison and guidance with the site Emergency Physician and in line with the medical practices.
Clinical Services
• Support the clinic medical team to ensure the site clinic facility and services are maintained at the highest level of operational standards including staffing, equipment and client support services.
• Be able to work any shift according to roster and requirements.
• Develop and maintain the highest possible standards of clinical practice within Medical Services
• Ensure that Universal Precautions are enforced and followed at all times.
• Promote and ensure a Continuous Quality Improvement environment & program is maintained
Customer Service
• Promote a high standard of customer satisfaction by further developing a culture of customer service amongst all clinic staff.
• Support the site medical team to ensure quality control & improvement in all aspects of customer service & patient care.
• Ensure that all clinic staff receive regular monthly training on key elements of pre-hospital emergency care.
Management of Inventory
• Support the site medical team to manage the site inventory of Medications, Consumables, Equipment and other assets in line with Consortium procedures and site-specific requirements.
Legal Requirements
• Ensure that patient care is carried out in accordance with National Regulations and Legislation.
Management of site clinic and/or emergency vehicles
• Support the site medical team to ensure that all medical equipment is in working order and properly maintained.
• Support the site medical team to accurately complete all daily checklists where applicable.
• Support the site medical team to take stock of the vehicle/s and ensure that they are fully stocked at all times.
• Ensure that the vehicle is cleaned on a daily bases (Inside and outside).
First Aid Training (FAT)
• Conduct informal non accredited basic and regular first aid training or refreshers for designated.
• personnel, including CPR, to ensure their knowledge and skills are maintained at an appropriate level.
• Arrange periodic simulated exercises and drills for first aid personnel.
• Support the site medical team to ensure that first aid equipment is maintained and checked on a regular basis.
• Provide regular hands-on training and skills transfer on the use of emergency medical and resuscitation equipment in the ambulance and at the site clinic.
Food & General Hygiene
• Support the site medical team to apply reasonable knowledge of safe food handling principles and practice to carry out inspection.
Information and Counselling, Health Education and Health Promotion
• Support the site medical team to participate in Company’s induction program, with a particular emphasis on the correct use and maintenance of personal protective equipment, healthy lifestyle, and personal precautions for the prevention of transmissible diseases.
• Support the site medical team to participate in the Company’s information campaigns on the subjects of personal protective equipment, healthy lifestyle, and personal precautions for the prevention of transmissible diseases through briefings, and collaboration in newsletters, as and when requested by the Company’s Management.
• Support the site medical team to present information to the clients/sites employees on healthy lifestyles (alcohol, drugs, smoking, diet, weight control, exercise, etc) or other health-related topics (blood pressure, cholesterol and heart disease, communicable diseases, etc)
Disaster Planning
• Understand your role in site emergency response and disaster plans.
• Support the site medical team to ensure that an area for triage and multiple casualties is identified.
• Support the site medical team to ensure that critical medical supplies and equipment are pre-packed and available for emergency use at dispersed sites or during patient transport.
• Participate in simulation exercises organized by Company’s management.
Quality of service
• Support the site medical team to ensure that all site facilities are operational to set client criteria and set client standards.
• Support the site medical team to ensure a high standard of customer satisfaction by taking a direct and personal hands-on approach with individual staff and client designates
Customer Service & CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement)
• Support the site medical team to ensure that the site has a functional CQI program
• Support the site medical team to ensure that the facility is maintained to an operational standard of professional excellence.
• Attend weekly and/or daily meetings of medical and administrative staff as directed by the Manager to report on and discuss issues relating to the operation and improvement of services and activities.
• Support the site medical team to participate in the overall development of personal education/skill level by attending corporate training, seminars and lectures
• A neat and clean personal appearance.
• Develop and maintain a hands-on approach with all site staff
• A professional, friendly, tactful attitude and behaviour to all site staff
• A customer service commitment at all times
• Effective communication skills.
• Professional teamwork with doctors and other members of staff.
• A positive attitude.
Qualifications and Experience required.
• Minimum 5-6 years of experience in EMS services and the Oil & Gas industry.
• 5 years minimum of experience as a remote site medic.
• Diploma in Emergency Medical Care (EMC) or Critical Care Assistant (Advanced Life Support Paramedic) from a recognized institution and MBBCh (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) from a recognized Medical University
• Advanced Life Support, ACLS, and ITLS accredited
• Knowledge of the OHSA
• Astute pre-hospital emergency medical expertise with leadership skills
• Extensive knowledge of industrial medicine in the Oil and Gas industry
• Basic level of literacy in MS Excel
• Knowledge of international medical scientific evidence-based standards
• Good business writing skills, especially in report writing.
• Excellent written and verbal communication in English
• Actively listens and seeks information, identifies internal client needs and checks understanding, builds rapport
• Focuses on accuracy, completeness and timely delivery of work; can follow procedure, develops processes and systems to check accuracy e.g., checklists; can follow quality assurance techniques.
