Self Help Africa (SHA) is an international NGO dedicated to the vision of an economically thriving and resilient rural Africa. We have 50 years of experience working with smallholder farmers, farmer associations, cooperatives and agribusinesses across Africa to help farmers grow and sell more food, improve diets, diversify incomes and make their livelihoods more sustainable and resilient to external shocks. SHA also builds awareness of issues affecting smallholders and represent their interests at policy and institutional level.

Self Help Africa received funding from Irish Aid to implement a 2-year project focused on reducing hunger and malnutrition as well as promoting gender equality among 1,560 smallholder households in the districts of Kapelebyong, Katakwi, Amuria, Kalaki and Kaberamaido in Teso Sub Region, Northeast Uganda. This ‘Food Security through Climate Resilience and Gender Equality project’ operates through grassroots adaptation of climate resilient approaches to food production, advocacy on the Right to Food, strengthening market linkages, diversification of income sources and adoption of a joint husband/wife household planning approach. Self Help Africa Uganda urgently seeks to recruit a suitable Consultant to undertake the following task.

CONSULTANT FOR MARKET SYSTEM APPROACH FOR THE FOOD SECURITY THROUGH CLIMATE RESILIENCE AND GENDER EQUALITY UGJ4 PROJECT

Under the overall supervision of the Regional Programme Manager, the Consultant will work with the Implementing Partners in the districts of Katakwi, Kapelebyong, Amuria, Kalaki and Kaberamaido and with the 2 CBO partners to apply market system approaches to improve the competitiveness of agricultural producers to respond to new and expanding market opportunities, this includes assisting farmer groups in on-farm and off-farm business development, developing innovative financial inclusion models and approaches. Key areas of responsibilities include:

Identify potential off takers for the value chains the farmers are engaged in.
Identify business companies with the potential to support businesses undertaken by smallholder farmers,
Facilitate market driven linkages between smallholder farmers, input/output dealers, and other value chain actors by establishing business relationships
Support FOs to analyse agribusiness trends in order to provide recommendations for business growth and problem solution when the project phases out.
Support institutional and enterprise development for smallholder farmers and Farmer Organisations (FOs).
Oversee the digitisation of the selected farmer VSLAs.
Take lead in the documentation and sharing of lessons learnt on financial inclusive models.
Identify potential linkage with mainstream financial service providers i.e banks, SACCOs, MFIs, FINTECHs with an aim of improving smallholder farmers financial inclusion.
