JOB DETAILS:
Purpose of position
To oversee and ensure the successful execution of fieldwork, insectary, and molecular laboratory operations for various entomological research projects at IDRC.
Key Result Areas/Outputs
• Provide strategic leadership and supervision to the entomology team, ensuring coordination between field entomologists, lab technologists, and insectary staff for optimal performance
• Ensure accurate and timely submission of reports on project status, progress, and key deliverables to management and stakeholders
• Develop clear project timelines, work plans, and budgets, with consistent monitoring of progress to meet milestones and objectives on schedule
• Oversee the efficient operation of the entomology laboratory, ensuring proper sample processing, adherence to quality control measures, and effective data analysis
• Manage and supervise field data collection activities, ensuring successful execution of surveillance and field operations in alignment with project goals
Job Description
1. Oversee and coordinate all IDRC entomology grants and strategic initiatives.
2. Manage the entomology team, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
3. Ensure timely achievement of project milestones and deliverables.
4. Oversee the accurate and timely collection, entry, and verification of study data.
5. Conduct regular quality assurance and data validation checks to maintain data integrity.
6. Contribute to the writing of progress reports for stakeholders.
7. Oversee the procurement and management of study supplies and equipment inventory.
8. Train and supervise field and laboratory staff on data collection, sample handling, and adherence to safety protocols.
Qualifications and other desirables for the job:
Education: Option 1:
• Diploma in Medical Entomology and Parasitology
• Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology or a related field
• Master’s degree in Public Health, Molecular Biology, Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, or Microbiology and Immunology
Option 2:
• Bachelor of Science in Zoology
• Master’s degree in a laboratory-related field (e.g., Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Immunology) is mandatory
Experience and Skills:
• At least 3 years of experience in laboratory and entomology work
• Demonstrated experience in team management and leadership
• Strong skills in developing work plans, setting timelines, and tracking project progress
• Exceptional organizational abilities to manage multiple projects and stakeholders efficiently
• Proficiency in database management systems for entomological data analysis
• Ability to work collaboratively with cross-disciplinary teams i. e Entomologists, Lab Technologists, Epidemiologists, Public health officials, Environmental scientists and community stakeholders
• Excellent communication skills for report writing, presentations, and engaging with partners, donors, and Ministry of Health officials
• Knowledge of statistical methods and proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., R, SPSS, STATA) is a plus
• Strong attention to detail and interpersonal skills
• GCP and HSP certification is required
