JOB DETAILS:
Responsibilities and Duties
• Administration of Laboratory
• Reviews and approves all laboratory procedures and policies
• Responds to problems encountered in the laboratory operations in a timely manner.
• Participates in planning for laboratory related issues
• Requisitions for supplies necessary for laboratory work and keeps a record of their inventory and use.
• Reports any malfunction of equipment to Medical Director and appropriate personnel as soon as possible.
• Represents the hospital at medical laboratory related activities as required.
• Performs any other related duties as may be assigned by Supervisor.
• Supervision
• Adheres to CHU and Ministry of Health standards of patient care, treatment protocols, and documentation. Adhering to standards of performance for interaction with other units (within and outside of the hospital).
• Coordination of the day to day laboratory operations
• Accurate analysis of laboratory specimens & high degree of proficiency and understanding in laboratory procedures.
• Performs all functions with regard to drawing blood, specimen, and performing laboratory tests of patients, as per physician request.
• Examine body fluids and tissues for abnormal chemical levels, cells or bacteria.
• Prepare biopsy tissues and ship them for microscopic examination by pathologists.
• Determine blood type for transfusions.
• Conduct medical research and analyses.
• Operates and maintains sophisticated instruments and equipment used in the division, is able to properly set up, calibrate, maintain, operate and shut down such instruments.
• Maintains competence in Laboratory Information System that is crucial to the quality operations of the laboratory and patient care.
• Actively participates in Quality Improvement Programs essential to ensure that laboratory testing is accurate, timely and meets customer needs.
• Training and Development
• Teaches others the proper aspects of laboratory functions including managing supplies and maintenance of machinery associated with laboratory equipment
• Participates in CME activities as may be organized in and outside of the hospital.
• Trains and orientates new Medical Laboratory staff and interns in the performance and interpretation of tests.
• Communication
• Ensure effective communication with other disciplines within the facility to ensure a continuum of patient care.
• Conduct performance review for all staff in the Laboratory.
• Participates in staff & conducts departmental meetings.
• Communicates effectively with all other hospital employees to ensure proper patient care from every discipline within the facility

• Maintains patient confidence and protects the hospital by keeping information confidential.
• Spiritual Ministry
• Participates in the hospital’s Spiritual Ministry programs.
• Occupation Health and Safety
• All staff are expected to work in such a way that does not cause injury to themselves, other staff members or customers.
• Following & complying with H&S policies, processes & applying them to their own work activities, including using/wearing Personal Protective Equipment as required.
• Participating in activities directed at preventing harm & promoting well-being in the workplace Identifying, reporting & self-managing hazards where appropriate.
• Early and accurate reporting of incidents at work and raising issues of concern when identified.
• Other duties

Job Requirements
• A Bachelors degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or its equivalent preferred
• 1 to 3 years’ experience in Medical Laboratory Technologist functions preferred with extensive and Progressive experience in performing isolation and identification of pathogens in a busy reputable clinical laboratory as an added advantage.
• Ability to mentor the current lab team on isolation and identification of pathogens and improve on the current microbiological practices for better patient outcomes.
• Must be registered with the Allied Health Professional’s Council
• Good communication skills with peers, superiors, physicians, patients and their families
• Ability to explain to others laboratory tests being performed
• Ability and willingness to learn new techniques and procedures as are added to laboratory test menu from time to time
• Ability to handle or process confidential documents or material in an appropriate manner
• Ability to handle multiple tasks, establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision
• Willingness to travel to remote clinic associated with our facility as may be allocated
