Livestock Research Specialist
Background
On behalf of the International Livestock Research Institute (lLRl), Bioversity International is now seeking for a qualified candidate to serve as a Livestock Research Specialist. Bioversity international and lLRl are GGIAR Research Centres.
Role
Based in Kampala, Uganda, and underthe supervision of the Country Coodinator, Livestock CRP, the Livestock Research Specialist will support research on ‘Catalyzing the emerging Smallholder Pig Value Chain in Uganda to increase rural incomes and assets. The Smallholder Pig Value Chain is one of the focal Value Chains oi the ‘Livestock and Agri- food Systems‘ CGIAR Research Program..
Key Responsibilities
More specifically, the Livestock Research Specialist will:
Research management:
• Work with researchers and students in the project to plan, organize and implement research on testing of interventions to improve market linkages for incentivizing uptake of technologies to enhance pig productivity
• Supervise field data collection
• Supervise field data entry and data uploading to the server
• Maintain project database system
• Supervise enumerators and field staff for the Livestock CGIAR Research Program
• Participate actively in regular project planning meetings and annual project meetings
• Write quarterly summary reports for dissemination to all project members
• Carry other activities as required by the Livestock CGIAR Research Program
Program reporting and administration
• Travel extensively to the field to ensure project research activities are implemented timely and according to agreed protocols
• Work with the Finance and Administration Officer to plan field activities and prepare field budgets
• Oversee the Livestock CGIAR Research Program field expenditure for research activities
• Manage field equipment and suppliers
Maintain up-to-date inventories of equipment, supplies and consumables
Qualifications and competencies
• Masters Degree in Veterinary Medicine, Livestock Production, Animal Science Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness.
• At least five years of relevant experience with Livestock Value Chain projects and with coordinating Livestock Research (i.e. with field data collection, training, and coordinating with different stakeholders including farmers)
• A proven track record of coordinating and implementing farm research and capacity building activities
• Managernent and supervision of field teams
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an engaging personality
• Ability to work in multi-disciplinary and multicultural teams
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with interdisciplinary teams of scientists and partner organizations
• Ability to communicate with different stakeholders from inside and outside Uganda
• Understanding of the livestock and scapern Uganda
• Ability to handle electronic data entry and data management
• Strong English language skills, both written under spoken
• Willingness to travel locally, regionally and Internationally
Experience:
• Experience working in an international organisation and/or in applied agricultural research
• Experience with data entry in electronic databases

Terms and conditions: This is a locally recruited position and all benefits are denominated and paid in Ugandan Shillings. Bioversity's remuneration package includes a competitive salary, leave provisions and medical insurance. The initial contract will be ior a period of three years, subject to a probationary period of one year and is renewable based on performance and availability of funds.
