JOB DETAILS:
Justice Centres Uganda (JCU) a Project of the Justice Law and Order Sector (JLOS) is expanding its Legal Aid Services to include targeted advocacy and a holistic response to cases of Gender Based Violence and Sexual Reproductive Health Rights through Mini-Centres in the districts of BUNDIBUGYO, KASESE, TORORO and KAMPALA.
Justice Centres Uganda thus seeks to recruit competent, dynamic and creative individuals to join her team of passionate access to justice advocacy professionals in the following positions:
ASSISTANT LEGAL OFFICERS (4 POSITIONS):
The Assistant Legal Officer will report to the Legal Officer.
In Particular, the Assistant Legal Officer will:
• Support the Legal Officer in handling clients with cases of gender based violence at the mini-centre.
• Support the Legal Officer in outreach campaigns.
• Conduct while you wait sessions at the mini-centre.
• Mediate disputes as recommended by the Legal Officer.
• Undertake legal research, investigations and fact finding operations to establish underlying causes of the legal disputes and gender based violence in order to facilitate dispute resolution.
• Document and analyse human rights abuses within the region covered by the mini-centre.
• Prepare court cases and file documents for court where litigation is an option.
• Hold internal meetings with Legal Officer to discuss merits of cases, strategy and alternative options.
• Liaise with other JLOS institutions to improve the response network of gender based violence.
Professional Qualifications:
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Laws from an accredited Institution. Knowledge on gender and the law will be an added advantage.
• Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice; MUST be an Enrolled Advocate of the High Court with a VALID Practicing Certificate.
• Minimum of 1-2 year’s relevant experience in legal practice/ Court room experience
Specific knowledge, experience, skills, behaviour and personal qualities:
• Good understanding of gender issues especially gender based violence and sexual reproductive health rights.
• Experience working with the poor is an added advantage.
• Minimum of 1-2 year’s relevant experience in legal practice/ Court room experience
• Proven experience working with the poor is an added advantage.
• Knowledge of human rights and mediation.
• Excellent Interpersonal skills
• Good writing skills
• Excellent communication and presentation skills
• Good team player
